On this day: 'No choice' Wenger, Liverpool signed flop and Spurs wanted strikers

Arsene Wenger

On the 16th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 16th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 16th August 2012.

I didn't Wenger let him go

Arsene Wenger spoke of the sale of Robin van Persie, just one day after selling the club’s captain to regular and fierce domestic rivals Manchester United for £24 million.

The Frenchman stated:

"It's never great to lose players of that quality but he only had a year contract so we do not have a choice,"

Double Dutch flops

A couple of flop signings now, those who arrived with promise but failed to set the world alight, or indeed give it even a Chinese burn in 2012-13.

Both players arrived from the same country, Holland, with Oussama Assaidi and Vurnon Anita the players in question.

Liverpool paid Heerenveen around £3 million for the Moroccan international last summer. However he went on to play just four Premier League games for The Reds, and is set to depart the club a year later.

Anita arrived with more of a reputation, as a solid and reliable utility player.

Newcastle United paid for a player who was then said could ‘dictate the tempo’ at the club.

However the only thing he dictated was a poor campaign. He spent most of his time coming off the bench and failed to impress in a tough season for The Toon.

Same old, same old

Andre Villas-Boas was talking Spurs strikers a year ago. He wanted new additions to partner Jermain Defoe.

In the end he signed former loanee Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey as his striking options.

This summer it has been a similar tale, and he is still looking to follow up the signing of Roberto Soldado with one more attacker.
