It was widely believed the young Serb would miss a number of games following his injury during pre-season. But it is a huge boost to have him back so soon after his outstanding form last year.
While he will sit out the Blues’ opening game against Newcastle United, he could return for next weekend’s clash with Cardiff City.
“He is not ready for the next match but next week he will work normally with the whole squad,” Pellegrini said.
Nastasic’s early return is a huge boost for the club, but could be a blow to one player who had seen his absence as a chance to earn playing time.
Speaking to Talk Sport prior to the news of his teammate’s quick recovery, Joleon Lescott said, “No one likes to see colleagues and fellow professionals get injured but if it means me starting then great.”
Now in the last year of his contract, Lescott knows he will have to work hard to earn a new one. But with the potential double blow of Nastasic’s return and the continuing reports of a move for Pepe, Lescott could see his World Cup hopes scuppered due to a lack of playing time.
In other news Pellegrini has praised ‘keeper Joe Hart after his disappointing performance against Scotland.
“I haven’t spoken with him but Joe has to demonstrate why he is the best goalkeeper in England every week he plays,” the City boss said.
“Everyone can make an error in one match but personally I have a lot of trust in Joe Hart.”
In early team news for Monday’s match against Newcastle, Sergio Aguero is fit to play, and all four of City’s summer signings are in contention for a competitive debut.
“If he wants to go on loan to play more, we will try to give him (but) only if he agrees,” the manager said.
“We will see what happens with him today or tomorrow.”
