Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has urged Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy to swap the Championship for the Premiership.
McCarthy has been heavily linked with Premier League clubs ever since the Latics relegation to the Championship, but Trapattoni wants McCarthy to play in the top flight because "it has another quality, a top quality."
Chairman Dave Whelan has said he would sell the midfielder to a Premier League club if the price is right, here are five clubs who may be interested in the central midfielder.
A possible reunion with Roberto Martinez, Everton look a little short in the middle of the park and Martinez hasn’t been afraid to bring in players that he was worked with in the past so far during his Everton tenure.
It is no secret that McCarthy is admired by Alan Pardew and would certainly be a solid addition to their midfield, especially with Yohan Cabaye linked with a move away from the club, Pardew could be keen to capture the signature of the Irish international.
McCarthy certainly wouldn’t be a stranger to Andre Villas Boas’ style of play. If Tottenham’s interest in the McCarty is solid and not just a rumour, then maybe he would come in and offer something different from the outgoing Scott Parker.
There has been plenty of transfer activity at the Stadium of Light this summer, so if there were to move for the Wigan midfielder, a lot will depend on the price tag. Doubtful, but never say never.
They seem to be pretty busy in the transfer market with several loan deals, would there be enough in the transfer kitty for Martin Jol to take McCarthy. He would certainly strengthen their side and provide a lot of energy.
