2. 1829 -The first Siamese twins brought to the United States arrive in Boston. Chang and Eng were 18 years old when they arrived from Banesau, Siam. The twins were joined at the waist

3. 1896 - Gold is discovered in the Yukon which sparked the last great gold rush in the American West

4. 1906 - 1,500 people die in an earthquake in Valparaiso, Chile

5. 1958 - Madonna is born

6. 1960 - Cyprus becomes an independent republic

7. 1962 - Ringo Starr replaces Pete Best as the Beatle drummer

8. 1977 - Elvis is found dead at his Graceland mansion

9. 1983 - Paul Simon and Carrie Fisher are married

10. 1984 - John DeLorean is acquitted on eight counts of a $24 million dollar cocaine conspiracy indictment

11. 2008 - Sprint superstar Usain Bolt sets a new 100m world record of 9.69 seconds at the Beijing 2008 summer olympics
