Newcastle United latest: Taylor eyes early surprise and Fernandes talks

A round-up of news and views relating to Newcastle United.

Steven Taylor is hoping Newcastle United can catch Manchester City off guard in their first Premier League match of the season at the Etihad on Monday night.

"What you're going to find on Monday is a fitter Newcastle United team compared to last season, and hopefully we can show that and produce the goods on the pitch," he said in the Daily Mirror.

"The big games are what we look forward to. We've got Manchester City first game and, hopefully, we can catch them off-guard.”

Loic Remy is likely to miss Newcastle’s first three matches of the season according to Alan Pardew, with the French striker recovering from a calf problem. Along with the Manchester City match, Remy could miss games against West Ham and Fulham, with the trip to Aston Villa on the 14th September a possible return date.

Newcastle have missed out on Darren Bent, with the Aston Villa striker undergoing a medical at Fulham today after the Cottagers agreed a season-long loan deal for the 29-year-old.

Another striker Newcastle have been trying to complete a deal for is Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis, and the French side’s coach Remi Garde has said he hopes a resolution will come quickly after a protracted transfer saga.

Newcastle are also in talks to sign Besiktas winger Manuel Fernandes in a £3million deal. The 27-year-old, who spent time on loan at Everton in 2007 and 2008, only has one year left on his contract at the Turkish club, and predominantly plays as an attacking central midfielder.

Adam Campbell has joined Carlisle United on loan for a month, with Alan Pardew keen that the teenage forward plays some first team football while he decides whether he will be part of the Newcastle squad this season.

Lille have reportedly placed a price-tag of £13million on winger Florian Thauvin, with the French club hoping the valuation with stave off interest from Newcastle United, Marseille and Arsenal. Lille signed Thauvin was in January, but spent the rest of the season on loan at Bastia and could move again even before making his debut for the French side.
