On this day: RVP made £24m move and Agger said Barca 'would be great'

Van Persie United

On the 15th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 15th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 15th August 2012…

Nothing Van Persie-nal

This was the day that last summer’s biggest transfer saga came to an end – when Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie joined Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Dutch international signed a four-year contract with The Red Devils after the two teams agreed on a £24 million fee.

A year later and RVP is gearing up for a title defence as the Premier League’s most lethal marksman – and United’s new talisman after firing them to Premier League glory last term.

While Arsenal toil for a new strike sensation.

Lukaku's talking now

Romelu Lukaku really did not mince his words on this Wednesday morning.

The Belgian, who had recently agreed to join West Brom on a season-long loan deal, slammed his parent club Chelsea:

‘’I couldn’t see myself staying at Chelsea. I sacrificed a year of my career with them and didn’t want to put up with it any more, I decided in March I wanted to go out on loan... I got sick of watching the others from the bench. I just played 12 games and when I was playing well, they would take me off… my season at Chelsea went very badly…. I wasted my time. Last season I was in the reserves alongside a young lad who’d barely turned 15 and I asked myself what I was doing there.’’

Of course the Belgian international, who cost Chelsea a combined fee of £18 million a year previously, went on to have a stellar season with The Baggies – and is now set to be a feature in the Chelsea first-team, after a successful pre-season under Jose Mourinho.

Agger-do-do-do, love Liverpool, Barca'd be great

Here is a little gem from a year ago. Denmark were readying to face Slovenia in an international tie when Liverpool defender Daniel Agger had these words to say, in regards to interest from Barcelona:

‘‘Barcelona would be great. They are the one team who would make it difficult for me to stay.’’

12 months on and Barca are sniffing around once again … would he have changed his mind in that time?
