If reports from the Telegraph are to be believed, Manchester United boss David Moyes is either tenacious or foolish.
Despite Cesc Fabregas seemingly ruling out a move away from Barcelona, the midfielder is said to remain on Moyes’ wanted list, with a third bid ready should the player not feature prominently in the opening games of the new season.
The former Arsenal man has said he is happy at the La Liga champions, but the report claims a move could still be on the cards if he is overlooked in favour of the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Neymar in the coming weeks.
The Mirror reports that Leighton Baines is no longer on United’s radar, following widespread stories earlier in the week that they had not bettered their first and only offer of £12million.
However, a move for his teammate Marouane Fellaini may still be on the cards, although the same paper quotes a price in the region of £30million for the Belgian midfielder.
Given that United opted not to activate his previous release-clause of £23million, why they would suddenly bid £7million more is a mystery the paper opts not to explain.
And finally, in the day’s daftest rumour, Samuel Eto’o has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
The Cameroon international has been tipped for a move to Chelsea should they fail to sign Wayne Rooney. But now sources close to the Anzhi Makhachkala striker claim United are also in the running.
It is a “fact” the Mirror are surely right in believing is simply a way to force Chelsea’s hand. Moyes is unlikely to sign the 32-year-old when he already has Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney to call on.
Some rumours are only so until they become true. But others, like this one, have little to do with reality and everything to do with forcing another club’s hand.
