Odds: Man City 1/3, Draw 9/2, Newcastle 10/1
Last season's meeting: Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle United – Etihad Stadium, 30th March 2013.
Newcastle United will be looking to bounce back from a difficult season last year as they narrowly avoided relegation only a year after finishing an impressive 5th. Manuel Pellegrini takes charge of his first competitive game, as City manager and he will be hoping that his team will start off on the right foot and grab the three points at home.
There’s no doubt he has strengthened his squad over the summer and the pressure is on to win the title back from their cross-city rivals.
Newcastle will be confident that they have the weapons to damage their opponents, as their strike force will believe they can break through the City defence.
It will be a good contest at the Etihad but have the sense that there will be only one winner here, I think that Manchester will be going on to the pitch with a point to prove after last season with aims at putting a marker down to their rivals.
Manchester City have had an up and down preseason, they started with two losses on their tour of South Africa before beating South China and Sunderland to win the Barclays Asia Trophy, they lost to Arsenal in their last preseason game. Newcastle on the other hand drew with both Rangers and Braga in their final two warm up games.
The Magpies will be without Jonas Gutierrez and new signing Loic Remy, both with leg injuries while Manchester City will have to cope without Matjia Nastasic and Sergio Aguero who will both miss the game through injury.
Last season’s reverse fixture:
Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Javi Garcia gave City a vital victory at St James’ Park as they tried desperately to keep in touch with runaway leaders Manchester United.
