Manchester City latest: Atletico defender imminent or Pepe to arrive by the weekend?

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad...

Manchester City continue to be linked with defensive reinforcements – the latest being Atletico Madrid’s Martin Demichelis.

The Mirror reports – rather bizarrely – that the Argentine would be willing to move to the Etihad before he has made a single competitive appearance for the Spanish club.

With no quotes to back this one up, it seems one of the more far-fetched rumours in a summer full of them. And with City maintaining an interest in Pepe, it could simply be a case of one man being linked to force another man’s move.

The latest story from the Daily Mail certainly suggests that is the case, as they claim City will attempt to complete a deal for the Portuguese centre-back before their opening game of the season.

The report claims Manuel Pellegrini’s side are willing to pay more than £23million for Pepe, despite his age and the fact they will soon be able to call on Matija Nastasic once more.

But understanding the importance of squad depth, Pellegrini will know he will need a number of players for every position in the campaigns ahead.

And finally, as was expected, City will refuse to sell Edin Dzeko to Arsenal despite the Gunners’ reported interest in the player.

It was claimed yesterday that Arsene Wenger saw the Bosnian as a possible alternative for Luis Suarez. But the Mail claim City will rebuff any attempt to bring him to the Emirates.

Pellegrini has already said Dzeko is integral to his plans...and rightly so considering his pre-season form and innate talent.
