With the arrival of Marouane Chamakh offering a solution to Crystal Palace’s problems up front, Ian Holloway is set to turn his attention to bringing in a centre-back, and the Eagles could try and have a new player in place their Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Talksport have reported that Zuite-Waregem’s Bruno Godeau is on their radar, and despite only joining the Belgian club permanently a month ago, the 21-year-old could be available for around £800,000.
Godeau spent last season on loan at Zuite-Waregem from Anderlecht, helping his team to second place in the Jupiler Pro-League. The defender played nine out of Zuite-Waregem’s matches in the play-off round of the league, and impressed them enough to sign him this summer.
The youngster has been capped by his country at Under-21 level, and although he is unlikely to force his into the senior side anytime soon, there is little shame in that considering Jan Vertonghen is often used at left-back given the strength of the centre-back options Belgium have at their disposal.
Palace are in need of at least one central defender ahead of the new season, and Godeau fits the bill as an attainable target with plenty of potential. The 21-year-old is tall, and strong enough to match up to Premier League strikers.
Given Ian Holloway’s public desire for new recruits this summer, Palace have been linked with perhaps more players than any other Premier League side, and Godeau is just one of several defenders they are reportedly looking at.
Stade Rennais defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik is another apparent target, along with Genoa’s Andreas Granqvist. Palace are likely to be considering several options, but if Holloway really is keen to have a new player in before Sunday, then those options become more limited, and Godeau might be the easiest deal to complete.
