Manchester City latest: Barry move rejected; striker linked with loan deal

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

Following reports yesterday linking Manchester City with a number of defenders, it seems they haven’t yet given up on signing Pepe from Real Madrid.

The Daily Mail claims the Blues will return with an offer of £20million, having failed with a £15million bid earlier this summer. This comes after reports in Spain claimed the club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain was in Madrid to attempt to push through a deal.

One centre-back City can already call on is Vincent Kompany, and he has spoken to Sky Sports News about preparing for the new campaign.

It was probably the hardest pre-season I’ve had in my career,” he said. “It was quite exhausting, but really, really good.

He will be hoping all that hard work pays off in the months ahead, and is particularly keen to balance the demands of playing in a number of different competitions.

It has been a problem for English teams, and ourselves definitely, coping with the Champions League, the Premier League and all of the other competitions. We have changed our approach a little bit, so we will see at the end of the season.”

In news of potential outgoings, Aston Villa have reportedly turned down the chance to take Gareth Barry on loan this season.

Their former midfielder is seemingly surplus to requirements at the Etihad, and Talk Sport claims the England man was offered to Paul Lambert, only for the Villa boss to turn the move down.

While the Villans may not be interested, there will surely be plenty of top flight clubs who would be, should Barry agree.

One player certainly not destined for the exit is Edin Dzeko, despite reported interested from Arsenal.

The Mirror claims the Bosnian’s name is on Arsene Wenger’s list of possible alternatives to Luis Suarez, but Dzeko’s form, along with recent quotes from Pellegrini, suggest the City striker is going nowhere.

And finally, Alex Nimely is believed to be a loan target for Doncaster Rovers.

The Championship side were only yesterday linked with a similar move for Manchester United striker Federico Macheda; could players from both halves of Manchester soon be turning out together in the second tier?
