Jack Wilshere gets the dreaded hype from Steven Gerrard. A worry?

Steven Gerrard Celebrates

Jack Wilshere has joined Wayne Rooney and Joe Cole in getting the dreaded hype from Steven Gerrard.

When English footballers get talked up by Steven Gerrard, they have made it, but they should also be pretty wary.

Just ask Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney, two players who have caught the Liverpool captain's eye in the past.

But first, here's what he had to say about Jack Wilshere yesterday:

"He ticks a lot of boxes when it comes down to other players following his lead. Obviously I’m really paranoid about putting too much pressure on any player, especially Jack, but he certainly has the quality to do that.

“He’s got many strengths to his game and I’m itching to get out there and show we can form a good partnership.

"Even though he’s young, without adding pressure on him, he’s one of the best players in the squad."

Gerrard's intentions are clearly not to hype up the Arsenal youngster, but he can't really help it. He knows from the past that talking up players does not always have the desired effect.

Here are two famous examples, both in 2010;

“Wayne is in a position to make this World Cup his own, like Pele and Maradona. He is aware of that and the players around Wayne make sure he is aware of it.

"His confidence is sky-high and, physically, he’s in great shape. The stage is set for Wayne. He is at a fantastic age and he’s coming off the back of an unbelievable season, probably his best. He’s in the category of players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres."

And later that summer;

"Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe (Cole) can do as well, if not better. He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football.

"I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season."

It is safe to say both of Gerrard's predictions turned out to be disasters, with Rooney having a World Cup to forget and Joe Cole's move to Liverpool a nightmare from the moment he was sent off on his debut.

Jack Wilshere is well used to the hype; and he will surely be proud to hear Gerrard's faith in him. But if he knew about the Liverpool man's track record of bad predictions, the Arsenal youngster would be wise to ignore it and not let it go to his head.
