News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United boss David Moyes believes the fans will be ‘key’ to the club’s success this term.
“I think the supporters had the bit between their teeth. They know we have got a fight on this season, they know we have got a challenge and they are right up for it,” stated the Scot.
“And we are going to need them. We are going to need their vocal backing at Old Trafford, from the first home game, and hopefully we’re going to be ready to show them what we can do.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness ‘slammed’ Rooney over speculation he could leave United.
“I think you have to look at it from his point of view. He felt unloved in the later stages of last season. He wasn't first choice,” explained Souness.
“I think for someone who is a star and a great football player that would be hard to take. I don't think it's that much of a mystery why he feels the way he does.”
England boss Roy Hodgson is ‘boosted’ by Rooney’s ‘energy’, committed to his country in the international break.
“Body language is quite an important thing," said Hodgson.
"You can read quite a lot into a player's demeanour.
"You won't have it all the time as they have their own private problems, and at club level in particular you might have one or two who are unhappy with their situations,” he added,
United legend and Sky Sports presenter Gary Neville believes Moyes would be ‘mad’ to let Rooney leave United this summer.
“I don’t see how Manchester United can sell him at this moment in time. I really don’t because they wont be able to replace him,” stated Neville.
The Independent have published their player ratings for Sunday’s Community Shield win over Wigan.
In transfer news, United are still linked with ‘silent’ Gareth Bale who refused to discuss his future plans with reporters.
United striker Federico Macheda is ‘close’ to agreeing a season-long loan move to Doncaster Rovers in the Championship.
