With Manchester City rumoured to be interested in a new defender, names both old and new have been linked with a switch to the Blues.

Goal is reporting that Manuel Pellegrini has been given permission to make a move for Real Madrid’s Pepe – the man long-tipped to be his final signing of the summer.

Having previously been quoted £30million for the Portuguese international, Pellegrini is unlikely to get his man for significantly less; a fact cited by some as a reason to consider alternatives.

The Mirror claims the former Malaga boss has a list headed by Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopolous and Napoli’s Paolo Cannavaro.

The former has previously been linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool, and at just 21 is a player for both the present and the future. The Italian on the other hand is 32 and will be a short-term fix rather than a player who can challenge Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic in the long term.

Speaking of the Belgian skipper, he has been speaking about City’s recent defensive showings during pre-season.

Referring to the 3-1 loss to Arsenal last weekend, Kompany said, “Okay, we conceded three goals from three chances, but it wasn’t a bad game.

If it wasn’t good enough, I would say it, but during the week we did an incredible amount of work.”

And finally, City ‘keeper Joe Hart has spoken prior to England’s match against Scotland tomorrow evening.

Scotland are a team we want to beat,” he said. “You can’t get away from that fact.”

He also moved to reasure those concerned with the timing of the game, just days before the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Football is our lives. This is what we do,” he said.
