A look at key events at Manchester United through the years, which took place in this corresponding week.

1996 August 11th

United shoot down the Magpies. Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 0. United's double winners in 1995/96 met Newcastle United as league runners up, at Wembley in the 1996 FA Charity Shield. Manchester United cantered to a 4-0 win as the Geordies were no contest for the on-fire Red Devils. Goals for David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane got season 96/97 off to a flier. 

1998 August 11th

MUTV. The club take to television, United launch their very own TV station, serving up many a tele-visual feast for the club's supporters to this very day.

1967 August 12th

Pat Jennings scores at Old Trafford beating Alex Stepney.

In the summer sun at Old Trafford, United host Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Charity Shield, United as League One Division champions, Spurs winners of the FA Cup.

The two teams entertain in a 3-3 draw with Sir Bobby Charlton scoring a brace and the Dennis Law netting the other, Spurs' strikes were converted by Robertson and Saul, and an amazing kick-out from their goalkeeper Pat Jennings resulting in a goal.

On the stony hard surface it took an incredible bounce which took Alex Stepney in United's goal by total surprise, flying over his head and into the back of the net. The sides shared the trophy. 

2001 August 12th

Liverpool 2 Manchester United 1. Ruud Van Nistelrooy scores on his debut against Liverpool in the FA Charity Shield at the Millennium Stadium, in the first match of it's magnitude in England played indoors. 

2007 August 12th

United 0 Reading 0. The first time United in the Premier League had opened their campaign with a scoreless draw. Although the Royals were reduced to 10 men, the further bleak shadow was the loss of Wayne Rooney at the half-way break, after the striker fractured his foot in a harmless challenge with Reading's Michael Duberry. 

1977 August 13th

More trophy sharing when United and Liverpool fire blanks registering a result of 0-0 in the FA Charity Shield at Wembley. United had beaten Liverpool three months previously in the FA Cup final at Wembley 2-1 in front of 100,000 fans. 

1965 August 14th

The theme of trophy sharing continues as United v Liverpool at Old Trafford finishes in a 2-2 stalemate each club holding the FA Charity Shield trophy for 6 months. 

1979 August 14th

Dave Sexton, United manager broke the club's transfer fee record to bring Ray Wilkins to Old Trafford. Chelsea received £825,000 for their midfield captain. Sexton was also Ray 'Butch' Wilkins manager at Chelsea where he had signed Wilkins to the Stamford Bridge club as a 15-year-old. 

1994 August 14th

Manchester United 2 Blackburn Rovers 0. Strikes from mercurial King Eric Cantona in dispatching a penalty and a Paul Ince goal, gave United two consecutive League Titles and FA Charity Shield titles on the trot, having beaten Arsenal in the Shield at Wembley 5-4 after penalties in August 93. This was Manchester United's second double Charity Shield feat, first recording this triumph in seasons 1956 and 57. 

1987 August 15th

Whiteside hits a double in the 2-2 match at the Dell in a First Division game. Hugely likeable MUTV pundit Viv Anderson made his Manchester United debut on the south coast, along with other new boy Brian 'Choccie' McClair.

The ex-Celtic striker McClair went on to make a grand total of 471 appearance's for the Reds striking a highly important 127 goals, fantastic. Viv made 69 appearances for United in four years, hitting the back of the net, on 4 occasions. Shocking for a full back! The same goal tally in four years as Patrice Evra's haul last season.

Vastly talented Irishman, Norman Whiteside made 274 appearances in a Red shirt, scoring 67 goals, 47 in the League slightly less, than 1:5 ratio to league matches played.

2007 August 15th

Portsmouth 1 United 1. This Premiership tussle at Fratton Park saw Carlos Tevez make his United debut, which ended in a draw, Paul Scholes netting for United from 25- yards with an arrow-type drive, while Benjani leveled for Portsmouth with a well taken header to guide the ball past van der Sar. Cristiano Ronaldo saw straight red, for pushing his forehead into Richard Hughes face. This was United's second successive draw in the first two matches of the 2007/08 league season. Paul Scholes' strike was his 96th in the Premier League. 

1991 August 16th

Manchester United advised the Football League their intention to resign from the English football's top tier. United were not alone, the other 21 clubs of the First Division also tendered their resignations just as the 1991-92 league season was starting. This was the last season of the First Division with a committee formed to create the new FA Premier League.

1994 August 16th

Martin Edwards, United's chief executive fires back at Gordon Taylor the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, following Taylor's statement that there were too many foreign football players in English football which was detrimental to the national game-interests. 

1963 August 17th

FA Charity Shield: Everton 4 Manchester United 0. United were embarrassed at Goodison Park suffering the worst ever loss in a game with a major trophy to win. 54,840 fans watched the spectacle. United's team on the day; Gaskell, Dunne, Cantwell, Crerand, Foulkes, Setters, Giles, Quixall, Herd, Law and Bobby Charlton.

1996 August 17th

Wimbledon 0 Manchester United 3.

David Beckham scored a wonder goal from his own half, a 57-yard strike, Eric Cantona and Denis Irwin also netted. Beckham's goal was the longest goal in the FA Premier League history at that time.
