A round-up of news and views relating to Liverpool over the past 24 hours.
"It is something that we have to do everything we can to fix," Rodgers said.
"There has been a lot said and a lot reported, and we have made a stance, as a club and as a manager, of the commitment and the standards required.
"If you don't have that commitment and those standards then you won't play. It's as simple as that.”
Daniel Sturridge has said that he is ready to face Stoke City in next weekend’s Premier League opener after returning from injury to play against Celtic on Saturday. The striker played 45 minutes in the 1-0 defeat, a loss that ended Liverpool’s perfect pre-season record.
Stewart Downing is reportedly on the brink of completing a £6million move to West Ham, with the winger currently undergoing a medical with the London club. Downing joined Liverpool in 2011, and made 91 appearances in two seasons for the Reds. The winger will join up with another former Liverpool player, Andy Carroll, at West Ham.
Daniel Agger’s agent, Per Steffensen, has indicated the central defender would be only open to a move to Barcelona if Liverpool agreed to sell him to the Spanish side. There have been reports that Barcelona have turned to the 28-year-old after failing to sign David Luiz from Chelsea, but Liverpool have rejected a bid of £14.6million from the La Liga champions already, and are not prepared to sell Agger this summer.
Liverpool have reportedly edged ahead of Everton in the race for Granada left-back Guilherme Siquiera, who is valued at around £5million by the Spanish club. Rodgers is keen to sign another left-back, with Valencia’s Aly Cissokho also rumoured to be a target this summer. However Liverpool’s efforts to sign Siquiera could be scuppered if Real Madrid target the 29-year-old as a replacement for Fabio Coentrao, who is keen to leave the Bernabeu.
Reports in Spain have indicated that Liverpool target Diego Costa has signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid. Costa had been linked with Liverpool as a possible replacement for Luis Suarez, but now looks set to stay in Spain.
Spurs are considering a double swoop on Ajax for Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen, who have both also been linked with Liverpool this summer. Both players are in the final year of their contract at the Dutch club, and there has been speculation that they could be available for as little as £15million.
On HITC today we look at why Agger is as important as Suarez to Liverpool.
