A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Frank Lampard believes he is approaching peak condition in time for the start of the season after scoring in Chelsea’s win over Roma on Saturday. The midfielder has missed most of Chelsea’s pre-season matches, but scored a from 25 yards as a second half substitute against the Italian side, and hopes he can still play an important role for the Blues this year.
“I'd love to contribute. Things have changed a bit in the last couple of years but if I can contribute and be part of a successful team [this season] I'd be more than happy,” he said.
David Luiz has refused to comment on speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona, with reports in Spain suggesting the La Liga champions are lining up a second bid for the defender. Luiz is on international duty with Brazil in Switzerland this week, and said he would only discuss the national team. Chelsea have been adamant so far that the 26-year-old will not be sold.
Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o if they cannot complete a deal for Wayne Rooney this summer. Manchester United have insisted they will not sell Rooney, who missed the Community Shield win over Wigan and is currently training with the youth side, and Chelsea could target Eto’o if the striker is available at a bargain price of around £5million.
Eto’o himself is apparently keen on the move, suggesting he would like to link up with Mourinho, who was his manager at Inter.
“He is one of the best coaches in the world - and we had a lot of success together at Inter Milan. I would like to have the chance to play under him again - because it is never boring when Jose is around,” he said.
Arsenal and Napoli are apparently leading the race to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer. German side Wolfsburg are also interested in the 26-year-old, who could move in order to guarantee first team football ahead of next year’s World Cup.
