The upcoming Italian Serie A season is looking like being one of the most competitive races for the Scudetto in a while. While Juventus remain the favourites - Napoli, Roma, Lazio and the Milan’s cannot be discounted after productive summers.
But, for those who like to back the dark horse, look no further than Fiorentina.
La Viola have made some excellent summer acquisitions with the likes of Mario Gomez, Joaquin and Massimo Ambrosini arriving - while Giussepe Rossi’s return from injury is yet another bonus.
And until yesterday their pre-season campaign gave us cause for optimism. Vincenzo Montella’s side have scored a whopping 23 goals in their five pre-season games - but didn’t manage any yesterday against Sporting Lisbon.
It was the clubs final game before embarking on their Europa League campaign against Grasshopper Zurich.
And it was not the ideal preparation - as the underachieving Portuguese outfit won a comfortable game 3-0.
Fiorentina had chances, some of which should have been buried.
One of those opportunities fell at the feet of former Manchester City defender Stevan Savic.
But he missed the sitter, moments after gifting Sporting their second goal.
His atrocious back-pass to Gustavo Munua acted as a through ball for the Portuguese side - and the ball was duly slotted into the back of the empty net.
Savic has been a revelation since arriving in Florence, as part of the swap deal for Matija Nastasic last summer, showing little sign of the common errors he was making during his time at The Etihad.
But this blunder will be something City fans are more akin to seeing from the Montenegrin international…
