On this day: RVP played last ever Arsenal game while City win Community Shield

On the 12th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 7th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 7th August 2012…

Communi-City Shield

While we may have taken in the Community Shield between Manchester United and Wigan Athletic, for all its tentative pre-season candour, yesterday – a year ago to the day the Shield went home with the other Manchester club.

Set against the backdrop of the Olympics finale, and played at Villa Park, City won an exciting game 3-2.

The main talking point was however the sending off of Branislav Ivanovic for a foul on compatriot Aleksandar Kolarov – which split the pundits down the middle.

A Rod for our backs

Manchester City were not done on that day – as out of nowhere they snapped up promising midfielder Jack Rodwell from Everton.

Obviously tiring of his poor injury record The Toffees decided to cash in on the promising England international – selling him for £12 million.

City found out themselves just how frustrating his injury issues can be – he played just 15 times for City in 2012-13.

Last flight for Robin

Robin van Persie was the hero yesterday, scoring both goals in Manchester United’s Community Shield win – but a year ago RvP was the bad guy.

Arsenal fans, furious with his apparent desire to exit the club, booed him on to the pitch as Arsenal took on FC Koln in Germany.

It was the last ever time he would play for the club – as he joined United three days later.

Lukas Podolski however earned early plaudits – bagging two against his former club.
