EJ Manuel impresses in first start, Sanchez continues to struggle and all even in Philly

American Football - NFL

After the first round of preseason games were completed this weekend it is a good time to look at the winners and losers in our positional battles.

The Buffalo Bills EJ Manuel was the undoubtedly the star of the show this weekend as he took hold of the Bills' starting job with an impressive performance in Buffalo's 44-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts. The QB out of Florida state went 16 for 21 passing for 107 yards with 1 touchdown in his debut for his new team. His rival for a starting spot, Kevin Kolb, didn't get on to the field and Manuel will feel he has struck first in the battle to start in week 1.

Although he didn't do anything spectacular he was very efficient and it was highlighted by a solid short passing game, he will hope that in the coming weeks the playbook will be opened up and he can showcase his downfield threat.

In the other games the New York Jets didn't have the best of days, losing to the Detroit Lions was one thing but they seemed to be still no clear cut favourite for the starting QB role. Mark Sanchez was up to usual best, throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown, he had string of incompletions but did manage to throw a touchdown on an easily executed play to find Tight End Jeff Cumberland in the endzone. All eyes were then on Geno Smith as he looked sharp in his debut, he was removed from the game after twisting his ankle after avoiding a sack from the Lions defence. Smith will be looking to recover in time for the next game, he know the pressure is on Sanchez.

In Philadelphia there wasn't much to choose between Foles and Vick, both players weren't on the field very long only attempting six and five passes respectively. There are still three games to decide who will start but neither QB has done anything to damage their chances.

As the month of August moves on these positions will become clearer and it will intriguing to see who takes the reigns of their teams.
