According to reports, Arsene Wenger is hopeful of making new signings before the start of the season after a long and frustratingly quiet summer at the Emirates so far.
With a summer that promised so much for Arsenal fans – the club’s new and improved sponsorship arrangements and the so-called £70 million ‘kitty’ to play with had brought them only Yaya Sanogo, a 20-year-old striker on a free transfer from Auxerre.
With less than a week to go until the start of the new season and their imminent Champions League qualification play-off against Turkish giants Fenerbahce, Arsenal have sold and released more than 20 players and brought just one youngster in.
Their squad at present is threadbare and despite some strong and impressive displays in pre-season, Wenger will undoubtedly require at least two or three new additions to ensure he has enough depth and quality to fight on the four fronts of European and domestic cups and competitions this term.
The potential arrival of Luiz Gustavo would be a sign that the ball is rolling and the wheels are set in motion finally. The frugal Frenchman would be wise to dip his hand in his pocket before the deadline day festivities ensue.
Suarez looks no closer to the Emirates than he did in July and Arsenal still only have two senior goalkeepers at the club and three centre-backs. Olivier Giroud is on fine form but at present he is the only recognized centre-forward in the first-team squad.
With the majority of that squad now travelling to various locations across the globe for international duty this week, perhaps the manager will be more inclined to find the time to focus his efforts on incomings.
The departure of Gervinho to Roma last week will likely be followed eventually by departures of Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh who are linked with Malaga and Crystal Palace respectively – the departure lounge has been almost evacuated but there remains no sign of life at the arrivals gate.
You suspect the arrival of one however, may just trigger a number of others as the Gunners look to finally get their act in gear.
