Aubameyang explains Premier League snub - Did Arsenal ever have a chance?

Gabon V South Korea

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been discussing his decision to join Borussia Dortmund.

Robert Lewandowsk-who?

That is the question being asked in Germany after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's sensational hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut at the weekend, making him an instant sensation at the club.

He was signed after a superb season at French club Saint Etienne, but his addition was relatively low-key thanks to the more expensive arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and the way Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich have dominated the headlines during the off-season.

So suddenly the centre of attention, his goals have demanded it, he has been talking about his decision to snub the Premier League in favour of Dortmund.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle United were linked with signing the Gabon international, dubbed the 'African Neymar' because of his liking for an outlandish hairstyle.

"Many people thought that I would go to England, but I chose Germany for some good reasons. I followed the Bundesliga over the past two to three years and have seen the growth of this great championship. There are so many strong teams, playing good football and I love playing here.

"My adventure started well and I'm settling in quickly. I hope to score a lot of goals and I'm working on it. "

So was Aubameyang always set on going to Germany? Only if you take his comments at face value. For Dortmund were simply the highest profile club to make an offer.

Had Arsenal followed up on their interest, there is every chance he would have been talking next weekend about how much he has always loved the Premier League and 'loves' playing there too.

Footballers can be a fickle bunch, but they have to go where the opportunity lies, and at Dortmund club and player may just have found the perfect partnership. If his opening performance is anything to go by, Robert Lewandowski has a serious fight on his hands, and so does Pep Guardiola's Bayern.
