5. 1947 - President Harry S Truman signs the National Security Act, creating the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff

6. 1952 - Argentina's first lady, Eva Peron, dies in Buenos Aires at the age 33

7. 1952 - King Farouk I of Egypt abdicates in the wake of a coup led by Gamal Abdel Nasser

8. 1953 - Fidel Castro begins his revolt against Fulgencio Batista with an unsuccessful attack on an army barracks in eastern Cuba

9. 1994 - A car bomb explodes outside the Israeli embassy in London injuring 14 people

10. 1999 - 1,500 pieces of Marilyn Monroe's personal items went on display at Christie's in New York

11. 2000 - Oasis storm off stage after being hit with bottles, can and coins at a Swiss music festival
