1. 1792 - French revolutionaries took the entire French royal family and imprisoned them

2. 1926 - Fidel Castro is born

3. 1932 - Adolf Hitler refuses to take the post of vice-chancellor of Germany. He said he was going to hold out 'for all or nothing'.

4. 1937 - The Battle of Shanghai begins 

5. 1942 - Walt Disney's Bambi opens at Radio City Music Hall in New York City

6. 1961 - Berlin was divided by a barbed wire fence to halt the flight of refugees. Two days later work on the Berlin Wall began

7. 1992 - Woody Allen begins legal action to win custody of his three children. A judge ruled against Allen in 1993

8. 1995 - Baseball great Mickey Mantle dies of cancer

9. 1966 - The Supremes' You Can't Hurry Love is released

10. 2004 - Hurricane Charley, a category 4 storm, strikes Florida and devastates the surrounding area 

11. 2008 - U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps won his 11th career gold medal, becoming the first athlete in Olympic history to do so
