On this day: Rooney bagged brace, Leeds signed 'sewer rat' and Agger replacement sought

Sewer Drain Grid

On the 11th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Leeds United and Liverpool.

With transfer rumours and gossip galore this morning revolving around the likes of Fabregas, Suarez, Bale, Rooney and pretty much everyone who is anyone sometimes it is nice to take a break from it all.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 11th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 11th August 2012 …

Roo-d’nt you believe it

This time 12 months ago Wayne Rooney was certainly in a different position to what he finds himself in right now.

Manchester United were playing German outfit Hannover in Germany and at one point were 3-1 down against the Bundesliga outfit.

But a double from Rooney helped them to an eventual 4-3 victory.

Fast forward a year and Rooney is not even in the squad for the Community Shield game against Wigan. Reportedly injured he is strongly linked with a move to Chelsea this summer.

Diouf, Rat-tle and Neil

It was on this day that Neil Warnock shocked everyone by snapping up El-Hadji Diouf. Diouf was signed on non-contract terms by Leeds United - just 18 months after the manager had labelled him a ‘sewer rat’.

When Diouf abused Jamie Mackie of QPR, who had broken his leg, whilst at Blackburn Rovers - Warnock was incensed.

Diouf is still at Elland Road - but Warnock is not.

Agger Godin nowhere

Liverpool were ready to make a bid for Atletico Madrid centre back Diego Godin - as a replacement for reportedly Manchester City bound Daniel Agger.

Of course the deal never came to fruition - however Agger continues to be linked with an Anfield exit 12 months on.

But the Dane was recently made the clubs vice-captain and an exit seems unlikely.
