Given the tough start David Moyes was handed by the Premier League fixtures computer, Manchester United’s new manager will have hoped that he would have made some key signings well before the start of the season.
However Manchester United have struggled this summer, especially in regard to signing a new midfielder, and after being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas, Moyes now has very little time to bring in a new player.
Marouane Fellaini is no doubt on United’s shortlist, but they will be facing another player that they should consider today in the Community Shield in Wigan Athletic’s James McCarthy.
McCarthy has been linked with several Premier League sides this summer including Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, and his impressive performances last season mark him out as someone who should be in the top flight.
Wigan are desperate to keep him, and have indicated he will not be sold for less than £15million. Although that is a steep price-tag for the 22-year-old, Manchester United should consider a move for McCarthy.
He might not have the glamour of a Fabregas or an Alcantara, but McCarthy has four years of Premier League experience already, and few would doubt his quality after his displays last season.
The Irish player has the tenacity that United have lacked in their midfield for a couple of season, but is also an excellent passer, and comfortable carrying the play forward with the ball at his feet.
McCarthy is unlikely to bring many goals to United’s team, but they should be looking at an improved season from Shinji Kagawa to provide that, allowing the 22-year-old to act as the engine room of their side.
After a frustrating summer, Manchester United fans are keen to see a well known star join their team, and McCarthy does not fit the bill in that regard. However the Wigan player has plenty of qualities that their team needs, and if he impresses at Wembley, then Moyes should consider a move for James McCarthy.
