Chelsea weekend round-up: Including Rooney rivals and Bertrand hopes

Ryan Bertrand

News and gossip from the past 48 hours at Stamford Bridge.

Mark Schwarzer had a game to forget, but goals from Frank Lampard and Romelu Lukaku spared his blushes against AS Roma.

After failing to control a pass-back from Ryan Bertrand the Australian left Erik Lamela with a simple finish into an empty net.

But a Lampard strike and Lukaku finish earned them victory in Washington.

Jose Mourinho has stated he will be fighting till the ‘last day’ to sign Wayne Rooney but he could have a challenge on his hand. It is reported that Arsenal are ready to re-enter the race for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

It comes as a bid for Luis Suarez grows increasingly unlikely.

However it is believed that, despite the England internationals respect for Wenger, he has his heart set on a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Another England international who wants to make an impact at Chelsea this season is Ryan Bertrand. The 24-year-old made 38 appearances in the Chelsea team last term - but mostly as back-up for Ashley Cole.

This season however he hopes to become a regular starter:

‘’It's been a good pre-season for me and I'm pleased to have been involved as much as I have. Hopefully I can increase that playing time (on Saturday) which will put me in good stead for the start of the season.’’

Barcelona expect David Luiz to hand in a transfer request this week. The Catalan club have earmarked the Brazilian as their number one defensive target this summer - and believe Luiz also wants to make the switch.

Mourinho claims that Barca are wasting their time.

Chelsea’s Under-21’s lost to their Tottenham counterparts in the opening day of the Under-21 season.

Goals from Harry Kane, Shaquille Coulthirst and Iago Falque (2) saw Spurs win 4-2 - with Chelsea’s goals coming courtesy of Josh McEachran and Isiah Brown.
