Today's Championship preview and predictions

A look ahead at todays Championship games and predictions.

Blackburn Rovers v Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are todays visitors at Ewood Park as they take on Blackburn Rovers in what could be a tight game, both teams will be hopeful of reaching the playoffs this season and despite it only being the second round of fixtures it will be one the very much want to win.

Blackburn will welcome back the first team players today after they were given a midweek night off in the League Cup loss to Carlisle United, whilst Simon Cox is missing for Forest after injuring himself in the sides 3-1 win over Hartlepool. It’s going to be a very tight game but one in which I think the home side might prevail. Prediction 2-1

Blackpool v Barnsley

These two teams had contrasting fortunes last week with Barnsley crashing to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan whilst Blackpool were 3-1 victors over Doncaster Rovers, todays clash should be an interesting one and I think Blackpool will remain perfect at the start of the season grabbing the win, Barnsley will come good and I expect them to be somewhere around the middle of the table come the end of the season. Prediction 2-0

Bolton v Reading

Both of these sides will be looking for a return to the top flight and whilst not a huge amount has changed at either club during the off season it is going to be these games which really sort out where the clubs will finish their campaign, such is the nature of the Championship. Today I expect no quarter to be given and the spoils to be shared. Prediction 1-1

Brighton v Derby

Derby looked good last weekend when drawing against Blackburn Rovers and a similar performance will be needed today if they are to get a result against Brighton, there has been something of a resurrection for the team in the south and they look a really good prospect this year, an organised performance will see them ease this contest. Prediction 2-0

Charlton v Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will be annoyed by their defeat in the League Cup this week when they crashed out in perhaps the scalp of the round to Accrington Stanley, so tyhey will be up for the challenge of putting 3 points on the board in this match, a feat which I rully expect them to do, for my Charlton are the picture of mediocrity at the moment looking like they could win or lose game s easily only to end up caught in tight battles, today this will not be the case and I’m plumping for a big away win. Prediction 0-3

Huddersfield v QPR

QPR’s four year plan as highlighted in the documentary of the same name word out a treat, they were guided frome the depths of the Championship to the Premier League, but that plan lasted two short seasons and the task is to get promoted once again, Huddersfield will pose a threat with home advantage but I fancy QPR to edge this one. Prediction 1-2

Ipswich v Millwall

For Ipswich to have a good season they have to turn Portman Road into something of a fortress, intimidating the opposition into defeat, against Millwall they face an intimidating side themselves and the away side might just have the mental edge in a close contest. Prediction 0-1

Sheffield Wednesday v Burnley

Sheffield Wednesday are in trouble, at least that’s the verdict of a friend of mine who support the Owls, if they are to have any sort of good season then these are the games where they need to pick up points, Burnley won’t be easily frightened when it come to a trip to Hillsborough but the home side should have enough. Prediction 2-1

Watford v Bournemouth

Watford were desperately unlucky last season to miss out on a place in the top flight thanks to a Playoff Final defeat, this season they will look to make amends to this and try once again to get to the Premier League, today’s opponents will be no pushover but if Watford are serious about their prospects then home games like this must be won. Prediction 2-0

Yeovil v Birmingham

Going on last week’s results, a 1-0 win for Yeovil over Millwall and a 1-0 defeat for Birmingham at the hands of Watford this should be a very tight game with not many goals, but when does football ever work out like that, I’m going for a reversal in performances this week with Birmingham coming out on top and in a game with many goals. Prediction 2-3
