Bayern Munich got their Bundesliga title defence under way last night - with victory over Borussia Monchengladbach at the Allianz Arena.
It was an eventful game, which at times looked more like a basketball match, such was the end-to-end nature of the tie.
In the end Bayern prevailed, 3-1, with goals from Arjen Robben, Mario Mandzukic and a penalty from David Alaba - in an eventful tie that also saw a Dante own goal and Thomas Muller penalty miss.
But there were several noticeable absentees from the opening fixture of the Bayern Bundesliga season - most notably two of the clubs summer signings.
Thiago Alcantara unfortunately came down with the flu at the end of the week and was subsequently ruled out of the tie.
Mario Gotze, the clubs massive signing from rivals Borussia Dortmund, also missed out - a hamstring strain the reason.
The Brazilian international is keen to move away from the Allianz Arena this summer - hoping to find regular first team football elsewhere, in order to help him in his bid to be an undisputed starter for Brazil at a home World Cup next summer.
And this week reports have emanated that read well for both interested Premier League parties.
It is reported the asking price for the Selecao star is just £14 million - a bargain for the talent Gustavo possesses.
On top of that, the only team so far to make an official approach for the player are out of the running.
Gustavo is also said to believe he must play in Europe to secure Brazilian assurances - something VfL Wolfsburg could not offer him.
So with that in mind, and the absence of Thiago and Gotze making it more likely he would be involved, where was Gustavo last night?
The official word from the club is that he is out with ‘knee problems’ and no return date has been given for his recovery.
Many Bayern fans have been speculating that his ‘injury’ follows in the suit of Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale and Wayne Rooney’s current ‘injuries’ - and that it could just be a transfer precaution by Bayern.
Do you think Bayern left him out because a transfer beckons?
