On this day: £15m Allen switch, Vela ditched and Modric hard-ball

Carlos Vela Arsenal

On the 10th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool,Swansea City, Arsenal and Tottenham.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 10th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 10th August 2012 …

Hot cup of Joe

On this day 12 months ago Liverpool snapped up Swansea City central midfielder Joe Allen for a staggering £15 million.

The Welsh international was originally subject to a gentleman’s agreement between Liverpool and Swansea City that made his signing unlikely.

However the two clubs reneged on that agreement as Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers got the one man he truly wanted last summer.

Allen went on to have an average campaign - but with a good pre-season behind him there is hope he could have a bigger impact in 203-14.

Not a Vela-fied exit

Carlos Vela was sold by Arsenal. The Mexican, after seven years at the club, was finally told to leave on a permanent deal.

He joined Real Sociedad, the team he had played for on loan the season before.

What happened next was surprising. Vela went on to have an outstanding season for the San Sebastian club - helping them qualify for the Champions League.

He was even linked with a move back to Arsenal on numerous occasions; such was his form last season.

Luka here you!

Luka Modric was told by Andre Villas-Boas to prepare for a role in the first-team. It came after weeks of speculation concerning the future of the Croatian international.

He was training alone and was not ready to play for the first-team as he tried to force a move to Real Madrid.

If it was a tactic to play hard-ball with the player it didn’t work - he signed for Real Madrid just 17 days later.
