As Arsenal transfer toil continues Higuain scores first Napoli goal

Gonzalo Higuain could have been an Arsenal player this summer. But last night he scored the first of many for Napoli.

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker continues, with today’s papers suggesting that a move for Wayne Rooney could be back on next week. It comes as their latest attempt to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool fell on deaf ears - and the club is said to be resolving itself to missing out on the Uruguayan.

As for Rooney, while it appears that United would be more willing to sell to Arsenal then Chelsea, the player himself wants a Stamford Bridge swap.

All in all, the clubs big name striker hunt continues.

But it could have been so different.

As while Arsenal continue to toil in the transfer market the man, who could have been theirs for £34.5 million this summer, was scoring his first goal for his new club.

It is reported the fee was the main stumbling block in any Gunners approach for Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain.

But he seemed up for the move, according to sources close to the player - at one point he was off for a phantom medical.

In the end however Arsenal’s interest dried up, with the tantalising taste of Suarez in his mouth Wenger moved on.

Napoli were waiting round the corner - and the Italian team didn’t mess about. They paid the fee Real Madrid wanted for the 25-year-old and brought him to Campania.

And yesterday he got off the mark.

After Benfica failed to clear their lines from a corner-kick the ball found its way to Higuain. In pure poacher fashion he controlled the ball before steering it past the Benfica keeper.

That goal proved to be the winner in the 2-1 triumph and Napoli fans will hope he continues to score goals in a fortnight’s time - when they kick off their Serie A campaign against Bologna.

And don’t be surprised if Arsenal still haven’t made a big signing by then.

Here is Higuain’s first goal for Napoli…
