Jose Mourinho has said that Chelsea will continue their attempts to sign Wayne Rooney until the last day of the transfer window, with the Manchester United striker the Blues primary target this summer.
“We are doing everything in an ethical way, so lets see if things change. There is no time limit. We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would look to have with us.We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day,” he said.
Rooney trained with the youngsters at Manchester United today for the second day in a row, and will not be part of Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match tonight. The 27-year-old trained with eight players from the Under-21 squad.
The ex-Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has described Chelsea’s £25million bid for Rooney as an insult. Chelsea have already had two bids for the striker rejected, and Robson has suggested Manchester United would not be able to replace Rooney without spending considerably more.
Chelsea youngster Nathan Ake has signed a new five-year deal with the club, and is likely to go out on loan this season to gain further first team experience. the 18-year-old, who can play in midfield or defence, made his debut for the Blues last year, and is likely to head abroad in the next few weeks.
Lucas Piazon’s loan switch to Vitesse Arnhem has been confirmed, with the Brazilian joining fellow Chelsea players Patrick van Aanholt and Gael Kakuta are the Dutch club. Piazon played three times for Chelsea last season before spending the second half of the year on loan at Malaga.
"If [Barcelona] need a central defender my advice is that they have to go to the second name they have in the list because they are wasting their time," Mourinho told the club's official website. "No chance."
