Can Morecambe beat Newcastle United and become this year's Bradford City?

Bradford V Swansea League Cup

Last season's Capital One Cup threw quite a few shocks and none more so than League 2 Bradford City pulling of a string of upsets to reach the final at Wembley Stadium, beating Arsenal and Aston Villa. Now Newcastle United have to be on guard from the threat of potential giantkillers Morecambe.

Sadly they lost heavily to Swansea City in the final but they managed to gain the support of many fans along the way, it even gave them the confidence to push on a secure promotion to League One.

Beating Premier League sides back-to-back along the way, Arsenal and Aston Villa fell to the Bantams, was an incredible achievement and any lower league team will looking for these kinds of results to give their league form a boost.

This begs the question can we see a repeat in this season's competition? Well we've already seen a shock this week as League Two Morecambe beat Wolves at home after a breathtaking free kick from Ryan Williams in the 1st round on Tuesday night.

The next day they drew Premier League Newcastle United at home with real hopes of causing another upset, especially in front of their home fans at the Globe Arena, and progressing to the third round where the clubs participating in Europe enter.

The Shrimps were tipped for relegation this season so a long cup run could provide a good distraction from the difficulties in League Two. They started their season poorly losing 1-0 away to Wycombe Wanderers.

Throughout the history of the League Cup the most memorable moments have been the upsets when the favourite doesn't always take the glory, think of Northampton triumphing at Anfield against Liverpool and third division Swindon Town beating Arsenal in the 1969 final.

These are all the memories that the Seaside club will look to recreate and after last year who would bet against them?
