6. 1958 The first edition of Blue Peter is transmitted by the BBC

7. 1960 - Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is released from the Georgia State Prison following a direct
intervention from Robert F. Kennedy

8. 1968 - An estimated 6,000 marchers demonstrating against the Vietnam War face up to police outside the US Embassy in London

9. 1978 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin are named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their work toward a Middle East accord

10. 1997 - Stock markets around the world crash because of fears of a global economic meltdown

11. 2005 – Riots begin in Paris after the deaths of two Muslim teenagers
