Former Aston Villa hero Juan Pablo Angel still going strong at 37

Juan Pablo Angel

Former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel is still scoring the goals, now in his homeland of Colombia.

It is more than a decade ago since Juan Pablo Angel became Aston Villa's record signing, at a price of £9.5 million.

He spent seven seasons there, most successfully in 2003/04 where he bagged 23 goals in all competitions, ensuring the affections of supporters.

While Angel did not live up to some of the over-zealous expectations which preceded his arrival, touted as South America's next striking phenomenon from his time at River Plate, he had a largely successful time at Villa, even if he did not go onto take the next step or propel Villa to silverware.

He left in 2007 to join New York Red Bulls, where he enjoyed a prolific start, and bagged more than 60 goals in four seasons. After spells with two more MLS clubs he rejoined the club where it all started in January, Atletico Nacional.

Atletico was the club where he began his career back in the mid-90s. He has enjoyed a successful return, bagging six goals in 15 games.

And this week he was on the scoresheet again, proving that at 37 he still has a lethal touch.

Atletico Nacional were playing Peruvian side Inti Gas Deportes in the Copa Sudamericana, and won 4-0. Angel's match was soured by a penalty miss, but he scored the second goal in their triumph.

It may be his career swansong, but with one of South America's top prizes on offer, while still a long way from conclusion, he is determined to go out on a high if this does end up as his final season.
