Hull, Crystal Palace or Cardiff - Who will pull off the first 'upset' of the season?

Premier League Trophy

Every season there always seems to be one promoted side that seems to have the ability to upset the bigger teams. Who will strike first when the season begins?

We saw Hull City in 2008-2009 beat Arsenal and Tottenham away, also Stoke City hold one of the best records at home against top half teams, Swansea City showed that you didn’t have to play long ball football to beat the big sides; Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City were all notable scalps.

So the question turns to who will take up that role this season. Cardiff, Crystal Palace or Hull City? Well all three sides will have their chances in the opening month of the season to upset the odds and overturn one of the top 6.

Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur – 18th August

The opening weekend of the season throws up the first London derby and Crystal Palace will be confident they can take advantage of the usual slow starts of Tottenham. You can usually count on Derbies to throw up major upsets and I won’t be surprised to see the three points staying at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea v Hull City - 18th August

Newly promoted Hull City start their campaign in the toughest possible circumstances as they travel to Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately for those supporting the underdog there is unlikely to be an upset here, as Chelsea will have too much at home against the new boys.

Cardiff City v Manchester City – 25th August

Premier league title challengers City travel over the border to Wales to face the Bluebirds, this could really be a chance for the Welsh side to take advantage of a newly shaped squad that hasn’t had time to bed in to the Premier League yet.

Manchester City v Hull City – 31st August

City at home are a formidable opponent and I can’t see an upset in this one as Man City will be too strong. Despite over the past few years falling foul to promoted sides.

Cardiff City v Everton – 31st August

Everton might come into this game reeling from the loss of two of their key players and Cardiff will be in pole position to beat the Merseyside club. This is one early fixture that you could certainly see the promoted side take the spoils.

Cardiff City v Tottenham Hotspur – 21st September

It seems to be a continuing theme that Tottenham could be caught out by lower half opposition, but we have seen over the past few seasons that the North London side can be undone by sides they are expected to beat. Cardiff City will motivated for this game, Spurs beware.

These are just some of the games in the first month of the season that could produce upsets but Everton’s game in Cardiff looks to be the most likely to come up with the goods. But remember in football anything can happen on any given day. It will be interesting to watch it play out.
