On this day: Cazorla signs, Song troubled and Suarez signed new deal

Luis Suarez Free Kick V Zenit

On the 7th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Barcelona and a Luis Suarez story from Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 7th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 7th August 2012 - including one very interesting story…

Santi comes bearing gifts

Arsenal signed Santi Cazorla on this day 12 months ago. The club utilised the poor financial situation at his club Malaga in order to bring him to The Emirates - and it turned out to be an excellent deal.

Arguably, Cazorla was the star of Arsenal’s season in 2012-13. He certainly was their best player for the first six months of their campaign.

He ended with figures of 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions and is expected to play a significant role in the first-team once again next campaign.

Song the run

Staying with Arsenal and this time Alex Song - and Barcelona’s continued interest in the player had Wenger all in a tizz.

It was reported the Frenchman had become enraged with a player he felt owed a lot more to the North London club then his quite open pursuit of a Catalan switch.

If he had hoped an effusive stance with the Cameroonian was going to work - he was wrong.

Two weeks later Song completed his switch to the Nou Camp.

Luis ‘Liverpool fan’ Suarez

Saving the best till last? I think so.

It was exactly a year ago to the day that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez agreed a new deal with the club.

Here is what Suarez said at the time:

"To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city. That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract. When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan."

Nothing mentioned there about a clause in the contract saying he could leave in a years’ time - should Liverpool not make the Champions League.

Because 12 months on to the day the Uruguayan has made it clear he wants to leave Anfield and that the club have gone back on a promise given to him in 2012.

Now it seems he is willing to take his case to the Premier League in order to force through a move away from the club. The same club he was a ‘fan’ of where he was ‘so happy’ living in a ‘dream’.

Funny what can happen in a year?
