Rival supporters have been describing Brendan Rodgers as the 'gift that keeps on giving'.
The latest reason for them doing so is the comments he made last night, a contradiction in terms of his and Liverpool's ambition.
The jist - 'We will not settle for second best, fourth is our target.'
Here is what he actually had to say to Liverpool's website:
"We see this season as a great opportunity to hopefully move forward again. I'm forever an optimist - we will always fight. It's what Liverpool Football Club is about. We never accept second best.
"The challenge is to get into the Champions League positions, but not just be in it, but try to fight and go as high as we possibly can. That has to be the main target, to arrive in the top four."
Many would agree, partisan rivalries aside, that Rodgers is simply being realistic.
But in making comments like 'we never accept second best' as a platitude, and then immediately contradicting himself, he is not helping himself out.
Liverpool fans what do you make of Rodgers? Are his comments embarrassing or just unfortunate?
