A Tottenham move for Vlad Chichires is now increasingly unlikely.
Football agents are particularly busy this time of year, and Ioan Becali is one such example.
The Romanian represents his countryman Vlad Chichires, who had appeared on the verge of a move to Tottenham last week.
The international defender was said to be being lined up to replace Steven Caulker, surprisingly sold to Cardiff, before the club owner of Steaua Bucharest intervened and blocked the move.
Even despite this, Becali claimed a deal was 99 per cent agreed and could still be salvaged late last week.
He has since backtracked, telling the Italian press Chichires will be staying put this transfer window, amid interest from both Roma and AC Milan.
He said: "With Spurs it's all over. For him until December (will) play with the jersey of Steaua Bucharest with utmost commitment and professionalism. In January, then we'll see the situation, for now it is useless to talk about one thing that should happen (in) between three to four months."
Becali last night claimed that Arsenal were trying to move for another of his clients, forward Ciprian Marica.
It is perhaps best for Spurs that the dragged out saga will not play out any longer and they can move onto other targets.
Their defeat to Monaco at the weekend showed the limitations of their squad at the back, and a defender now has to be a priority. It looks though as if it certainly won't be Chichires.
Who do you want Spurs to sign at centre-back?
