Seemingly awash with cash from the Premier League's new bumper TV deal, Southampton are one of several sides outside last season’s top six who have been happy to show ambition in this summer's transfer market.
Not only have they brought in Victor Wanyama and Dejan Lovren, they have been linked with a list of players normally associated with teams chasing a Champions League place, including Leandro Damiao, Pablo Osvaldo and Ever Banega.
Southampton have also been canny in signing up their most exciting prospects to long-term deals, hopefully signaling an end to the times when their best talent wad cherry-picked at will by bigger sides.
However there is one area of significant concern in their side, which is their strike force.
Mauricio Pochettino is likely to favour a system with only one central striker next season, and given that they gave the prolific Rickie Lambert on their books, Saints fans might say they will be fine.
However there is a distinct lack of depth in the ranks behind the 31-year-old, and although Jay Rodriguez can also cover in the centre if required, Southampton need another option in case Lambert succumbs to injury or poor form.
Emmanuel Mayuka could still leave on loan, and Guly Do Prado is not ready to lead the line, so should Southampton weigh up a move for Jermain Defoe, who has been linked with a move form Tottenham Hotspur this summer after the arrival of Roberto Soldado?
Defoe will be keen to get regular first team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup, and will also want to stay in the Premier League.
The striker is a proven goalscorer in the top flight, and could be a smart addition to a squad that is looking capable of challenging for a European place.
Southampton fans, do you need another striker, and should Defoe be considered?
