Manchester City to step up their Pepe pursuit due to Nastasic injury?

Pepe And Ramos

Matija Nastasic has been ruled out for four to six weeks, will Manchester City now be all the more keen to land Real Madrid’s Pepe, who has been linked with the club throughout the summer?

Having enjoyed a fine summer in the transfer market, Manchester City arguably have the best squad in the Premier League, with strength in depth in almost every area.

However the one spot they needed to reinforce was at centre-back, and with Matija Nastasic now certain to miss the start of the season, the hunt for a new defender will become paramount.

Real Madrid’s Pepe has been linked with a move to City all summer, and it now makes more sense than ever that Manuel Pellegrini will try to sign the player he worked with during his brief tenure at the Bernabeu.

The 31-year-old dropped behind Raphael Varane in the pecking order at Real Madrid last season, and has been coy when questioned about his future recently, indicating he would be open to a move to the Premier League runners up.

Having allowed Kolo Toure to leave on a free, the injury to Nastasic means that City only have Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards and Vincent Kompany available, and there are still doubts about Lescott’s future.

Pepe would bring plenty of experience to City, and with Pellegrini no doubt hoping to improve his new side’s record in the Champions League, the Portuguese defender, who has made it to the semi-finals in each of the past three seasons with Real Madrid, would be a fine signing.

The centre-back does have a reputation for losing his head, but outside the fever pitch atmosphere of Barcelona and Real Madrid’s rivalry, and now 31, Pepe should be able to control his wilder side in the Premier League.

Nastasic looks set to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the next few years, but given his injury and the fact he is still only 20, having Pepe on the books would be an excellent move to give the team enough experience and quality to achieve success next season, while also giving the Serbian youngster time to develop.
