Liverpool latest: Including Suarez and Sturridge

A round up of the latest news and transfer stories connected to Liverpool.

The saga surround Liverpool forward Luis Suarez rolls on with the Evening Standard suggesting the striker hasn’t given up on a move to Real Madrid. Arsenal have been very public in their pursuit of the player but the Standard has reported that Suarez hasn’t given up on the possibility of moving to the Spanish capital.

The striker however has injured his foot in training and will miss the friendly clash on Wednesday with Valerenga. Liverpool have stated he will undergo a scan to assess the damage.

Barcelona remain connected to Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger, possibly as part of a double sweep or instead of Chelsea defender David Luiz. Chelsea have insisted David Luiz is not for sale, which could force the Spanish club into focusing their attention on Liverpool’s Danish star.

That’s a move that Liverpool simply can’t let happen considering the current Napoli links to Agger’s centre back partner Martin Skrtel. The Italian side want to take the Slovakian on loan for the new season, but Liverpool are reportedly keen to offload him permanently with a fee of £12 million mentioned in some reports.

Liverpool are struggling to do a deal for Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid, despite putting in an impressive offer of £21 million. The bid was designed to trigger the release clause in his current contract but he’s said he’s happy to stay with the Spanish club if they’re happy to have him.

However, a deal for Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel could still very much be on, with reports indicating an imminent £6 million bid from Liverpool. Marseille have already had two bids for the player turned down, his contract at the Portuguese club expires in the summer of 2016.

Liverpool also seem content to let any possibility of signing Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld slip by, with Everton reportedly keen to do a deal. The Belgian defender has been strongly linked with an Anfield switch although nothing has ever materialised from the rumours.

Meanwhile, the club’s fans have reacted to the news that midfielder Stewart Downing has reportedly been offered to Newcastle United. Several fans have argued for his departure saying it will ease the wage bill at Anfield while others have argued he should stay based on his form last season.

However, Newcastle are reportedly uninterested in landing Downing, with sources in the North East suggesting Alan Pardew is more content on signing another striker.

In other transfer news, Bolton haven’t given up on the possibility of signing Jay Spearing on a permanent basis. The Liverpool midfielder spent time on loan at the Reebok Stadium last season and Bolton boss Dougie Freedman is keen to tie up a deal after Spearing rejected the chance to join Blackburn Rovers.

In other news, not related to transfers, Liverpool have received a huge boost with the news that striker Daniel Sturridge will be fit for the new season following an ankle injury.

“Thankfully Daniel had his first training session (on Monday) with the team and I thought he looked very sharp. He's played no part in the pre-season so you put him in at the top end of the field with his pace, power and his quality,” said Rodgers.
