Southampton have had an ambitious summer in the transfer window, and the arrivals of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama have proved some of that ambition to be more than just Nicola Cortese blowing hot air.
‘’We manage a lot of information about very good players. One of them is Damiao, also Banega and also Wanyama. We are managing the situation as well as we can at the moment. The main thing is that we as a club, Southampton, are managing when these negotiations happen so that is what is happening.’’
The interest in Leandro Damiao now looks to be as complex as ever, with his lofty price-tag preventing any move for the player. Although with Spurs signing Roberto Soldado they may now have a clear shot at the Brazilian international.
The other player mentioned was Valencia midfielder Ever Banega.
Now this isn’t the first time that the Argentine midfielder has been linked with a move to the Premier League. A few years ago he was heavily linked with a switch to David Moyes’ Everton - only for a deal to fall apart at the last minute.
A versatile midfielder, with all the attributes you’d expect from someone who has carved out a successful La Liga career since 2008, he is certainly the type of player who would make an excellent midfield partner for Wanyama, Morgan Schneiderlin or Jack Cork.
And if Saints fans needed a note of just what this 25-year-old is capable of, he gave it to them in Valencia’s 4-0 thrashing over Inter Milan in New Jersey last night.
His strike from 30 yards, without back-lift, sailed past Samir Handanovic into the top corner.
So while Southampton would certainly want him - the deal that makes Damiao a more plausible target could affect any deal.
After selling Soldado to Spurs the La Liga outfit are no longer in need of selling players this summer - meaning negotiating any deal for Banega has just become more difficult.
Which is a shame - as I’d like to see some goals like that next season.
