On this day: Moura medical, Caulker hopes and Carroll loan deal no-go

On the 5th August 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and West Ham United.

With transfer rumours and gossip galore this morning, revolving around the likes of Fabregas, Suarez, Bale, Rooney and pretty much everyone who is anyone sometimes it is nice to take a break from it all.

So to do so I am casting back to this exact day, the 5th August 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th August 2012…

Moura than a feeling?

A year ago today it was reported that Brazilian midfielder Lucas Moura was all set to undergo a medical with Manchester United.

The starlet was the subject of a transfer tug-of-war last summer - with United going toe-to-toe with Paris Saint-Germain over his signature.

The Brazilian Football Federation quickly confirmed that they had no knowledge of the Sao Paulo playmaker being given permission to leave the Olympic camp to have a United medical - and that’s because he didn’t.

Three days later he agreed a deal with PSG.

Black hole of Caulker-ta

Steven Caulker was in the news 12 months ago - talking about his long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur.

He was hoping his performances for Team GB at the London Olympics would help convince Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas that he was wrthy of first-team football the following season.

In some respect he was right - he went on to play 28 times for AVB in 2012-13.

But the Portuguese wasn’t impressed - Caulker was sold to Cardiff City about a week ago.

Big Sam goes Carroll singing

Perhaps the best story from a year ago this day revolves around Andy Carroll.

12 months ago Sam Allardyce made it very clear what he thought of a potential loan deal for the Liverpool forward:

‘’I would probably have stuck my neck out and said we would almost certainly stay up with him on board. We wouldn't have thought we would have had any chance of signing a player of Andy Carroll's capabilities but it became clear a couple of weeks ago there was a possibility of a loan. Unfortunately at this moment, it's not the case.’’

It seemed there was no chance of this deal happening then.

But as interest dried up in the Geordie Liverpool got desperate - and on the 30th August Big Sam got his man.
