Reports that Cristiano Ronaldo is close to agreeing a new contract with Real Madrid might have given Tottenham Hotspur fans hope that the Spanish side would cool their interest in Gareth Bale, but given their very public pursuit of the 24-year-old this summer, there is still every chance they will try and complete a world record deal for the Welsh forward.
Should it go through, the move will open up plenty of possibilities for Spurs in the transfer market, and one potential target that might become available is Hulk, who is reportedly open to a move away from Zenit St Petersburg.
The forward’s reputation took a hit last season when he failed to reproduce his Porto form at the Russian side, and with his place in the Brazilian national team under threat following an indifferent Confederations Cup, Hulk would no doubt be keen to reunite with Andre Villas-Boas, who helped him become one of the most sought after players in Europe.
Playing on the right of the attack in a 4-3-3 system, Hulk scored 36 goals and set up 21 more in Porto’s treble-winning season under the Portuguese manager in 2010-11. Having just turned 27, Hulk is still easily capable of recapturing his best form, and he might view Spurs as the perfect place to do so.
With Villas-Boas apparently reportedly keen to introduce the same 4-3-3 system at Spurs next season, Bale was expected to play on the right side of their attack. If they sell the 24-year-old for a huge fee, Hulk would become affordable even at the inflated prices Zenit would demand for the player they paid around £40million for in September last year.
If the Brazilian is prepared to move to Spurs, and he has previously indicated that he is, then Hulk would be a fine replacement for Bale, and would become affordable if Spurs did sell the Welshman.
Spurs fans, would you want to see Hulk replace Bale if he left?
