12pm Sports News: Featuring the Ashes, Fabregas and Woods

Ashes 2009

A round up of the latest stories from across the world of sport.

England can retain the Ashes at Old Trafford if they close out the final day of the third Test for a draw. That would mean no chance of Australia winning the series with England currently 2-0 up. Australia have dominated much of the third Test but are likely to run out of time for win with rain expected for most of the day in Manchester.

Manchester United are reportedly still keen on trying to sign Cesc Fabregas, despite claims from Barcelona that the Old Trafford side have given up on the midfielder. United have already seen two offers for the play maker turned down and they may have to break their transfer record in order to get him.

Gareth Bale is reportedly unhappy with comments from his current manager Andre Villas-Boas. AVB has maintained the official stance that Bale is not for sale to Real Madrid, contrary to reports which have suggested that a deal between the two clubs is only a matter of time away from happening.

Andy Murray returns to action following Wimbledon glory at the Montreal Masters this week. Murray starts the hard court season, which he admits is his best surface, holding two of the four majors, going into the US Open looking to retain that title as he continues to target the world number one spot.

Tiger Woods has warmed up for the US PGA Championship perfectly with a win at the Bridgestone Invitational. Woods finished on an impressive -15 to secure his eighth title at the event, setting himself up well for the final major of the season which starts this Thursday at the Oak Hill Country Club.
