All the news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield this weekend…
The match was a fitting tribute for the Red’s legend, which also saw appearances from Robbie Fowler and the recently-retired Jamie Carragher.
But despite those returning greats, most eyes were on Luis Suarez, who came on in the 62nd minute to a fantastic ovation from the Anfield faithful.
Whether that is enough to make him stay remains to be seen, with numerous reports this weekend about the Uruguayan’s future.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that if Gareth Bale is worth somewhere in the region of £100million, then Suarez’s valuation shouldn’t be so different.
Speaking of Arsenal’s £40million plus £1 bid, Rodger’s said, “Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez were arguably the two best players in the Premier League and you can’t sale Bale is valued at more than 100 per cent more than Suarez.”
It is hard to argue with such logic, just as it is hard to see Liverpool selling to a domestic rival; something former managing director Christian Purslow agrees with.
“If the only offer is from Arsenal I would expect Luis Suarez to stay at Liverpool,” he told Radio 5 live.
Not that those feelings are dissuading Arsene Wenger, who has reportedly told a close friend he will be successful in his pursuit of the striker.
Those close friends – they are so chatty at this time of year.
Gerrard has also had his say on the Suarez saga, during which he also revealed that he turned down a move to a Champions League club last summer – believed to be Bayern Munich.
“There was no temptation,” the England midfielder said. “I have been through that enough before. That is the message for Luis.
“I am hoping from a biased point of view that he gives us another year and shows us the form he did last season.
“I don’t think it is the right time for him to go just yet.”
While Gerrard’s loyalty is perhaps unrivalled, he will hope the striker heeds his words.
Not that he is unimpressed with the club’s new arrivals; quite the opposite in fact.
“It’s got to be the aim,” he said, referring to a top four finish.
“All our new signings are settling well and hopefully there’s one or two more in these coming weeks.”
The midfielder would be an outstanding addition to Rodgers’ squad. But he will be hoping there isn’t a similar situation to the one that saw him miss out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
And finally, reports claim Pepe Reina is in the process of agreeing a move to Barcelona next summer.
The ‘keeper is currently on loan at Napoli, and was believed to be on his way to the Nou Camp before Victor Valdes committed for another year.
But it now looks like he will ultimately get his wish.
