Saints Row IV makers defend dildo weapon

Developers say its just harmless fun, make comparisons to The Hangover.

Senior producer Jim Boone and design director Scott Phillip have stepped up to defend their creation, Saints Row IV, and the decision to include a dildo weapon.

Talking to an audience on Reddit (via Gamespot), the duo responded to criticism that the lewd weapon will only hinder the game.

"I think of this along the lines of motion pictures," Boone commented.

"I just can't imagine Hollywood suddenly deciding that movies like The Hangover shouldn't come out because it is immature. Sure, it may not win an Oscar, but it sure is funny as hell and amazingly entertaining. People won't all feel the same way about that movie as I do, but that doesn't mean the movie shouldn't be made."

Phillip explained that the risqué sense of humour made the title unique and would ultimately appeal to gamers.

"We need to make Saints Row, not a game someone else is already making... sometimes you need a drama and sometimes you need a comedy, and Saints Row delivers something that players clearly want and aren't getting elsewhere,” he said.

The game has received sharp criticism from censors for its brand of humour combined with on-screen violence, with the Australian classification board effectively banning the title from going on sale down under.
