Peter Schmeichel delighted with 20-year-old's sudden development…
The sterling pre-season form of Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard has delighted legendary glovesman Peter Schmeichel, who shielded the Red Devils' goal-mouth during eight successful years in the 1990s.
'David Moyes will be pleased in the way that some players have grasped their opportunity,' said Schmeichel to ManUtd.com. 'I’m thinking about Jesse Lingard who is coming home from the tour as top goalscorer.'
Lingard has come a long way in a short space of time. Last season, he was sent on loan to Leicester City but failed to establish himself. That experience, though, did not perturb him as he has produced a starring role during the club's tour of Asia, scoring four goals.
'He had a very brief stay at Leicester and it didn’t really come off for him but he played for the Reserves again and was the best player in the Reserves squad. Maybe - just maybe - this is his opportunity and this is his year. It’s very interesting and, again, something for David to make a decision about.'
Lingard himself is becoming more confident in his own abilities. Having trained with the senior squad, produced good form on tour, he is now aiming to break into the first-team during the upcoming Premier League campaign.
He recently said: 'I believe in myself. Hopefully I can come straight through [the reserve team and into the senior squad].'
