News and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.
Arsene Wenger insists that his young side will form the basis of the side next season. While Arsenal are still targeting new players he wants to keep his tradition for bringing through young players going this term:
"We are still working on improving our squad but we have a base of young players who get a chance here and who started in the Premier League, such as (Wojciech) Szczesny, (Carl) Jenkinson, (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain, (Jack) Wilshere, (Aaron) Ramsey, (Theo) Walcott - that is unique, nobody else has done that. These players can have a special bond and they are on the way upwards, they are not over the hill. They will be better next year and that is why I am confident we will be stronger next season.’’
Wenger has also been speaking about Luis Suarez. While he mentioned he was still interested in the player, he refused to have any formal discussion about the transfer dealings. He said he is hoping to find an ‘amicable’ solution to bringing the Uruguayan to The Emirates.
More news on Thomas Vermaelen’s injury now - and it isn’t good. The Belgian defender will miss the next six weeks of action. The club captain has aggravated a back injury during the clubs pre-season tour of Asia.
Nacho Monreal will return to training on Monday from a similar ailment.
Arsenal face the potentially embarrassing prospect of going up against Gonzalo Higuain on his Napoli debut this weekend. The Argentine is expected to make his debut at The Emirates in the Emirates Cup on Saturday - not long after he was heavily linked with The Gunners.
A rather sad story now regarding Arsenal legend Kenny Samson. The former England full-back has fallen on hard times recently - and his battles with alcoholism have led him to living on the street. The club are trying to help him with his problems.
Another goalkeeper target has fallen through the fingers for Arsenal. Portuguese international Rui Patricio looks all but set for a move to French outfit AS Monaco. Julio Cesar is now the number one target - if Arsenal even want a new stopper.
Luka Modric was linked with a shock move to Arsenal this morning - which has now been dismissed by his current club Real Madrid.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said that ‘’It is not true that Luka will leave.''
Arsenal are in a battle with Chelsea and VfL Wolfsburg for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo. The Brazilian is worried about first team football at the Allianz next season - which could affect his place in the Brazilian national team. He has since admitted he could potentially leave.
Chuks Aneke will spend the first half of next season on-loan at Crewe Alexandra. The talented midfielder had an excellent term with the club last season and Railwaymen manager Steve Davis has moved to bring him in.
